Setting up a freshwater aquarium is a wonderful hobby nowadays. As wonderful and enjoyable as it is, keeping an aquarium can become an easy and challenging to most people who has just starting to create one. There are basic things to do and buy that you can’t afford not to give due consideration.

It occurs in the Buenos Aires region of Argentina including the Rio de la Plata. The Buenos Aires Tetra also is reported to be in Brazil and Paraguay, including in the Rio Parana and the Rio Uruguay.

If you like this post, please buy me a beer for $3 8-)The Red Eye Tetra, Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae, has a number of other common names, these include: Yellowhead Characin, Lamp Eye, Yellow back Moenkhausia, Yellowhead Tetra, and Yellow-banded moenkhausia. The Red Eye Tetra comes from eastern Bolivia, western Brazil, eastern Peru and Paraguay in South America.

Apart from predations by cats and herons, the fish are at the top of the food chain in a pond, and will readily devour tadpoles, dragonfly larvae and many other desirable creatures.

If you like this post, please buy me a beer for $3 8-)The Phantom Glass Catfish is often identified as Kryptopterus bicirrhis, but the ones offered for sale are more likely to be Kryptopterus minor, a similar but rather smaller species. Kryptopterus bicirrhis will grow to about 10 inches (25cm) long while Kryptopterus minor only grows to about 3 inches (8cm). The Phantom Glass Catfish is sometimes called the Glass Catfish, Ghost Catfish, or the Asian Catfish.

If you like this post, please buy me a beer for $3 8-)The Penguin Tetra is actually two related species, Thayeria boehlkei and Thayeria obliqua. The easily seen differences between these species are quite small. Both species have a tendency to swim in a tail down position, but this is more pronounced in Thayeria obliqua.

If you like this post, please buy me a beer for $3 8-)The Odessa Barb, Puntius padamya, has been known to the aquarium hobby for many years, but was only described scientifically in 2008. The Odessa Barb first came to the attention of the Aquarium Hobby as coming from Odessa in the Ukraine. It is in the group of about 10 species related to the Rosy Barb, Puntius conchonius.

If you like this post, please buy me a beer for $3 8-)The Peppered Catfish is a harmless scavenger. The only fish it eats are ones already dead. It is an omnivore and will eat most types of food. By nature it is a bottom feeding fish but it will eat at the surface at times. This fish comes from the warmer parts of South America.

If you like this post, please buy me a beer for $3 8-)The Silvertip Tetra, Hasemania nana, is occasionally called the Copper tetra. It comes from the Sao Francisco River and its tributaries in Brazil. Although the SilvertipTetra will grow to about 2 inches (5cm) long, most of the ones seen are little more than half this.
